“Half the Park is After Dark,” a slogan coined by astronomer and night sky advocate Tyler Nordgren leading up to the centennial of the National Park Service, is now a commonly recognized way to promote nighttime activities on our public lands. Growing up in Southern California, our favorite family summer vacations were often to places like Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park, Yosemite National Park, and the National Forests surrounding them. At that time our evenings were mostly spent having dinner and hanging out at the lodge or motel. If I would have known back then that half the park is after dark, I would certainly have pestered my parents to explore and discover a night sky far richer than we had in our suburban home on the outskirts of Los Angeles."
